Chapter 4

I wake at midnight to howling outside my window.

It is way too late for this. Too early? I don’t know. I got at least…five hours of sleep? It’s not bad. Still sucks, though.

I cover my head with my pillow and whine pitifully. I just wanna sleep.

I still hear the howls. There’s all of North Dakota to explore; why does he have to howl near campus? Idiot.

This continues for - I check my phone - ten minutes, and I’m now annoyed enough that it helps me sit up and open the window. “Ben!” I scream. It’s friggin’ cold. “Shut up!”

His eyes are fixed on my window. He lets out a low, wistful howl. I flip him off and slam the window shut. I shouldn’t need to cast a silencing spell, but I will if I have to, even if it’s unwise to handle spells if you’re tired or drunk.

There’s a series of gruff barks, but then he stops. Good. He better not wake me again.

Well guess what he just did?

It’s now properly morning and while I’ve had enough sleep, I am ready to cut someone. The sun’s not out yet, though there’s a hint of pink in the sky. There is absolutely no reason for me to be awake if the sun’s not out. I’m going to feed him to a dragon, I swear.

I storm downstairs, still groggy and I know I could’ve used my broom but I want my anger to fuel me right now and it builds as I step down every winding hallway and down the steps and I know I’m not being mature right now and I hope no students are still on campus or see me because I am not in Teacher Mode right now, I am in 20-Something That Wants to Be a Lazy Garbage Pile Over Break Mode and he is ruining it.

I throw the west exit doors open and hiss, “Okay, what do you want?”

He must hear me, because he comes toward - no, he limps toward me. I swipe the sleepies out of my eyes and yup, he’s definitely limping.

“What did you do?” I ask, aghast. “Geez, Ben.”

I turn on my phone’s flashlight, since there’s still enough shadow to make it hard to see. He squints at the brightness while I take in the mud-colored blood caked onto his fur.

“What on earth did you - where are you going?”

He’s backing away, looking over his shoulder back at me before picking up the pace.

He wants me to follow him again? Fine. He better not lead me far.

I grumble and wrap my cloak tighter around me as I follow, following the bushes lining the edge of the academy. The light from my phone finds him again in the dying shadows and there’s - a coyote. I tense at first, then realize it’s dead. Really dead. It looks like Ben had fun taking him down.

He noses the carcass, pushing it in my direction.

“Is this like how cats bring dead mice to their owners?” I blurt.
